Sad is the day when candy of this kind can no longer be had for $0.99 or less. That day arrived when the 99 Cent Store went under in my neighborhood of Lincoln Heights. Even when the 99 Cent Store was arukk around, they ultimately raised their prices on the candy section from $0.99 to $1.29. In hindsight of that, all things considered, the 99 Cent Store candy was truly a steal because what Smart & Final and the other supermarkets are charging for an equivalent no-name brand of generic gummy candy, it’s practically highway robbery.
Now, hear me out. The 99 Cent Store used to sell candy at $1.29 for a 6 ounce bag of generic gummy bears. However, the Smart and Final is selling almost the same bag of generic gummy bears at 1 ounce less and is charging a full $0.21 more. While, yes, those two dimes don’t really sound like much but when you factor in that you’re also getting slightly less, that means whatever remains in this bag just got slightly more expensive per piece than the previous price point.

I would totally be ok with paying $1.50 for 6 ounces of generic gummy bear candy but alas, that’s not what Smart and Final decided to do. In any case, the main difference that I can tell between these generic gummy bear candies and their generic gummy worm candy is the size of the piece. While the gummy worms are, obviously, shaped like a worm, these are just shaped like cute, tiny bears. Taste-wise, it’s not really all that different than from their gummy worms.

In a way, since each of the individual bear pieces are smaller, it takes less effort to chew to get to the sweet, fruit flavors where as the gummy worms do take a bit more effort before you start tasting the fruity, sweet goodness. My only real gripe is that I wish that they would actually up the ounce per package for the gummy bears over the gummy worms, since, in a way, it feels like there is less in the bag even though there is the illusion of ‘many peices’ in the bag that makes it seem like you’re getting more but you’re not. Just look at the dry weight and you’ll notice that you get the same amount (namely 5 ounces) of gummy bears as you do with the gummy worms.
