First Street Gummy Worms 5 Oz $1.50 @ Smart & Final

Ever since the local 99 Cent Store went bankrupt and abruptly decided to shutter all stores in the western region of the USA where they were mostly found, I’ve been struggling to find a good alternative to get my candy fix. Unfortunately, the closest Dollar Tree in my neighborhood is about one town over in Cypress Park. From where I live, that’s like a 40-minute walk one, which frankly, is 20 minutes over the desired walk that I would rather make had the 99 Cent Store not go under.

There used to be a Dollar Tree in Lincoln Heights (where the old Lincoln Mini Mall once resided so for those who know, you know what’s up) but that location went under a few years back, which to me, left a void where I could never find the frozen foods that I wanted as the 99 Cent Store located just a block over always sold out of frozen foods by the time I get off work. With the Dollar Tree, at least I knew that I could get the frozen foods (mainly frozen veggies and meat) whenever I stopped by. It’s so strange because it’s not like the competition was all that fierce in the area. Fast forward to the present, now Lincoln Heights doesn’t have a Dollar Tree or a 99 Cent Store in the area, which totally sucks.

That really only leaves the Smart and Final and the Big Saver Foods, as the two biggest supermarket chains in the area. That being said, the Big Saver Foods didn’t have any cheap stuff to buy. Everything sold there was, more or less, at retail price–even for candy, which leaves Smart and Final as the only one left since the Riteaid in Lincoln Heights also decided to go out of business as well. Traditionally, Smart and Final has never been cheap. It’s always been on the ‘higher’ end of the price spectrum but if you bought their ‘bulk sizes’ you could potentially save a few bucks. It’s like a small-scale Costco without having to pay a Costco memebership. Despite that, if you were to buy a smaller package of essentially the same item, they are charging a price premium over something similar, if you were to make the drive out to, say, a Grocery Outlet, an Aldi, or what have you where there are discounted food items. Candy, in this regard, is no exception to the rule.

The candy here at the Smart and Final in Lincoln Heights is often times priced from $0.25 to over $2.00 over the equivalent size or quantity from a rival supermarket–if you were to make the drive out there. There are times when I really don’t have the time nor the energy to make that drive. I just want something kind of close by yet also kind of cheap enough that I wouldn’t feel like I’m being ripped off. The 99 Cent Store and the Dollar Tree once filled those roles on more occasions than I care to remember. Heck, even the Riteaid, under the right circumstances, was still cheaper to buy from than to go to the Smart and Final for candy but now, there’s no choice but to buy from this Smart and Final–if I don’t want to make the drive out to the El Sereno Dollar Tree or the Cypress Park Dollar Tree whose parking lot is fairly limited and is frankly out of my way.

Keeping all of the above factors in mind, that $1.50 for a 5 ounce bag of gummy worms is the best price available in the area. Now, I’m sure if I had took the time to scour the local mini marts scattered throughout Lincoln Heights, I’m almost positive that I can probably find one that sold chewy, gummy candy at $0.99 or $1.29 (the old price point where the 99 Cent Store sold this type of candy) but I don’t really want to. More often than not, the local mini marts generally do not accept credit cards and if they did, they generally pass the credit card fee to the customers anyway so I may as well just go to a supermarket and pay roughly the same amount for essentially the same thing. All that being said, if you’ve ever had generic gummy worms from a no-name brand, they all pretty much taste the same. In fact, I’m almost positive that there’s really only one or two major candy manufacturers in the area and retailers source it all from the same one or two locations but just slap on their own branding on the packaging.

All in all, it’s ok. It’s good enough for what it is. These are gummy worms with a moderate fruity taste and that are also just mildly sweet. Not super sweet but also not super bland and rubbery. I would generally pick these generic gummy worms over the name brand one’s like Haribo or Albanese.
